modelin' gear

so there are two new physical modeling drum synth plug-ins floating around right now.

one is image line's drummax (the beta versions were called drummatrix) that i posted about earlier. it is finally seeing a full release version under a pay-what-you-will model (minimum $13, with $1 going to haiti relief efforts). i ordered a copy today, but since their orders are processed manually, i guess i won't get the download until this coming week. the beta version was pretty promising, and it's hard to argue with the price. i'll be interested to see what improvements were made in the final version. they also added a single-pad version of the plug-in which should be great to throw a bunch of instances into an ableton drum rack.

the second is drumspillage by the new company audiospillage. this mac-only plug-in is set for a march release, but there is a mini version available now. drumspillage promises multiple different models for different types of sounds, as opposed to drummax's one-model-does-it-all approach.

i downloaded the mini version and played with it a bit, and i was not exactly blown away. the mini version has three models: bass drum, wood drum, and electro hihat. the bass drum sounded pretty much like any other bass drum synth you've heard before. the wood drum was whatever. the electro hi-hat was the best model included and seemed pretty useful and flexible. i sounds basically like it's stacking a bunch of pulse waves and some noise, then running it through a couple of band-pass filters. so nothing revolutionary synthesis-wise, but depending on the quality of the other models in the full version, it could be pretty useful to have all these packed into one plug-in.

on a side-note, i've found the percussion synthesis section of this tutorial to be useful in the past if any of you want to mess with making your own drum sounds from scratch. this whole tutorial is focused on the nord modular, but should be pretty easy to adapt to reaktor or max/msp or something. the filter techniques section is also highly recommended. i found this site years ago, but have come back to it a lot over the years.

Oversteps: the fake was real.

The fake version of ilanders was about 2x as long, but otherwise the earlier-posted advance copy is the real thing.

Some of the tops and tails are different; the ones on the real one are a little more polished or fade in/out a bit more naturally, for the most part. i.e. it probably really was an advance copy.

If disappointment persists, take heart in the fact that if things stay true to form, in a year we'll all think this is the hottest shit ever.

I'll have more to say after I give this a couple of good listens. So far I've only listened to it all the way through once, at extreme loudness, while cleaning my house last night. My initial reaction was definitely "where are the beats?". Obviously there are some, but they seem to be subsumed by the stringy synth diddles and fizzy basses. But I also said the same thing the first time I listened to Quaristice; understandable since Untilted was pretty much the "fuck you, you will never make beats this complex, this good" record.

Let the weeping, gnashing of teeth, and looks of confusion begin. Maybe this will help you lament properly:

firewire audio interfaces

i've been thinking about trying to find a decent, portable firewire audio interface for when i (eventually) start playing shows again. i have my 828mkii, which is great, but it's racked in my desk right now and i just want to have a super-small, lightweight setup. ideally i'm thinking my setup would be something like: laptop, launchpad, nanokontrol, audio interface, period. so the motu kind of doesn't really work for portability, and is overkill anyway. the cheapest small motu's are in the $500-$600 range, which is more than i want to spend. m-audio has some ~$200 joints, but i won't buy anything from m-audio that's mission-critical. i saw that the presonus firebox is pretty cheap now, and i seem to remember hearing good things about it when it came out. all i really care about is that it's small, low-latency, durable, has 2-4 outs, and can have a separate main and headphone mix. it seems like the firebox has all of that covered. anybody know anything about this unit, or have any other suggestions?

stop hatin

so Google apparently deleted a bunch of popular music blogs today for repeated DMCA violation complaints. not that i think ours is large enough to warrant too much attention from any lawyers, it still might be a good idea for whoever's in charge of this joint to occasionally back that ass up.

since we're on mixes, I found a dinosaur bone buried in this one.

i was actually looking for unreleased monolith (on fire at the moment, by the way) and i stumble on some unreleased afx, and yawl know how i skeet over that shit, so...

THIS
page has a link to a mike paradinas mix from a few months ago.

dl it and ffwd to 44:00 or so (the first 44 minutes is just some lame announcer playing new trendy choons for bbc or some shite, although the first 5 minutes of THAT is a dope loops haunt track).

he opens with a pretty amazing monolith track, and then drops some untitled, unreleased CAUSTIC WINDOW and then fades into an unreleased aphex twin remix of luke vibert. it's not the most mindblowing stuff by any means, and it only drops for a few minutes, but still...

the rest of the mix is pretty good, too.

at about 54:30 he drops a subtrkt track called "atomic peace" that is pretty hot.

and then i lost track and now i can't tell what's what....

Autechre and death metal

Fresh ae mix shows their Relapse love, after an hour of almost exclusively Detroit/Stones Throw hip-hop (brief breaks for Def Jux and Ultramagnetic).

We missed the fucking boat

Go here and look what Dr. Kirby has brewing at UNCA. Seriously, an SSL? How the fuck did that happen? Was that huge old mixer a Tascam board that used to be in that room and we only had one Neumann? Fuck, an SSL? I found this only cause I imaged googled "UNCA Electronics Class" to find a silly picture to post for another post. A fucking SSL? That is a goddamn $80k console. Also of note- if you look here, there appears to be girls in the recording department. How did that happen? Dr. Kirby be hustlin over there, I guess he just had to get rid of his hellion batch. I know I was responsible for running at least one of the threes chicks off personally (with the help of Julian), but that is besides the point.

next we should all post pictures of our dicks

so far twh wins for nicest curtains.

sqrt(labs)

I got two jars next to my lab, one has a homemade fuzz pedal that I call the "Moonshine Fuzz." Damn I miss corn liquor. The other is labeled "blonde" and the insides are as killer as the man with no name.

Lexaunculpt is baaaaaack

and on Planet Mu, as well, doing a duo album with Brad Laner (formerly Electric Company):

http://www.midheaven.com/item/mislead-into-a-field-by-a-deformed-deer-by-internal-tulips-cd

From the samples and writeup, it looks to be a very different incarnation than the glitchy, pad-and-string extravaganza Lexaunculpt I know and love. Even not at all like the Elcolex split that this same duo did a long while back.

I'm excited that he's back, but mildly frightened by the whole singing+electronic pop thing (because I don't really get down for that - it's why I stopped listening to Telefon Tel Aviv). I guess another album just like The Blurring of Trees wouldn't really fly now, but a guy can dream. Planet Mu usually puts their stuff up for listening on Lala, so I guess I'll get a chance to audition to see what's come out of his long absence.

Anyway, keep yr eyes peeled.

What else are you guys looking toward coming out? (Besides Oversteps.) Post it, bitches.

Take Pills Die

I stumbled on this guy on tumblr and queued up some of his tracks to listen to today while I had mad crazy work shit to do. I wasn't jarred-in-a-bad-way once, and although the music never made me stop coding and go HOLYFUCKSHIT, it definitely wasn't total wallpaper music. Pretty highly Caucasian (you won't want to grab a pencil and pretend you're Stubblefield).

this in particular is the one I was listening to when I decided to post about it.

I think Brian in particular would be very interested in this guy's particular twist on sanity, metaphysics, music's role in society, etc. He releases everything under the by-nc-sa Creative Commons license (attribution required, non-commercial, share-alike), so... steal if you want.

I'll post lair pics later when I can get my hands on our not-my-phone camera.

just a quick driveby,

yea i'm interested in the jar next to it...

what's in there? Just happened to have had this on the desktop right here and now. not really my lab per se, but i did rock here for a solid 3 weeks or so. by the way, if you are having a creative block, moving some of your stuff to another spot is highly recommended to get that groove back. but yea, wanna see some mason jars or som'n with some odd, crystallized contents, labeled things like papaya poof.

tinnitus up in da lab

so i've been making some really uptempo beats, mostly inspired by dirty souf booty instrumentals (hurricane chris, ludacris, etc.). this requires the volume to be ear-shatteringly loud, which is why i feel like my ears might start bleeding any minute now. i'm sitting there looping some 808 kicks with the amp way high and i smell this strange smell. it smells like medicine or transmission fluid or something. and i look down at my amp, and the heatsink is creating smoke. i think it burnt dust or plastic. n-e-wayz, it inspired me to take a picture of "da lab." yawl should post pitchers of your labs, too. i already know what gray's looks like, but gray, if you're reading this, you should post a pitcher of your boomboom room, and make sure to include the volcano (and possibly one of those huge jars you keep next to it).
