8-Bit Trip

TIGHT

Thursday, August 20, 2009

finally some new music that gives me a gnarly boner.

ok, i've been forgetting to post this, and y'all have probly already heard this, but if you haven't, go here and get mount kimbie's "sketches on glass" right now. i'm convinced that there are moments in this ep that give me the same reaction as when i first heard "music has the right to children." it's just the right thing at the right time. i think mk's "maybes" might be even better, and it can be found here.

Thank you.

For finally adding an ODB memorial banner.

Look daddy I am going to show you Jesus

I went to St. Louis this past weekend, it is a pretty dope city, at least for a couple of days. The Art Museum had some really big named folks in it, and we had a good time getting are heads right and looking at eye candy.

I am in the "European Highlight" room, where all the pictures of Jesus and his boys were hanging out at. The above pic is Titian's "Christ Shown to the People." In this room, a 3 or 4 year old kid starting yelling "Daddy, come with me, I am going to show you Jesus, come on Daddy, I am going to show you Jesus" over and over. He said it like 10 times before his dad took him to the painting and the kid about put his hand through the canvas. Maybe it was my state of mind in the room that made it funny, or how loud the kid was screaming, or the fact that is was a painting called showing J-man to the peeps.

Also, some old man ripped a big juicy one in the contemporary art room with was about a 20'x20' room, and had about 20 or so high school kids in it. And man, he let it unload, and me and Tiff busted out. He totally did it on purpose too, his old wife was bugging the shit out of him.

If those two story's are lame, here is something to think about/discuss- is it bad to use those mailing labels charity places send you with out sending them money? If I throw them away, they are completely wasted. But, I don't really like helpless dogs and children, sick or not. Thoughts?

dj premier

i've been listening to a lot of dj premier and dilla instrumentals lately. one thing struck me about premier's beats today that is so obvious that i can not understand why it took me so long to figure out: all the pitched samples (everything besides the beats and bass) seem to be from one record, one song, even down to a single riff. he doesn't try to mix and match because that would throw the harmonies out of whack. am i wrong? another aspect that makes this all work so well is that there are usually only 3 distinct sounds happening: drums, bass, and a single sample. and the bass always seems to be gated (or at least timed so) to the kick drum. it's weird, too, how he takes one hook and one beat, loops it for 3 minutes with barely any variation, and makes the song go by without a moment of boredom, even on the instrumental, without lyrics.

if you haven't lately, check out the instrumental for common's "like water for chocolate." the dilla beats on that one are so right it gives me chills, and the premier beat "6th sense" is one of his top five of all time.

I didn't know how to handle this

Driving down the road listening to the radio, I heard the following ad, "96.5 the Buzz, at least you won't catch a venereal disease from a small Filipino boy."

This haunts my dreams.

The award for Most Disturbing Photographer of 2009 goes to Charlie White. He's responsible for the creepiest picture I've ever seen, as well as some other interesting works.

The club got shut down

Our Club got shut down before we named it and before the third show. What a shame. Cops came, neighbors were pissed, and landlord said no more shows. What a shame. We had a big sound system hooked up, a bunch of lights, so much shit we were flipping breakers like hippies candy flip. Shit was loud. May have been the sound system, may have been the keg of PBR, but the cops came. Our club got shut down. Tears run down my face. All the hard work setting all this shit up is down the drain. But so is the life of a FREE-lance Audio guy. I got a bunch of free gear, volunteered my time, and cranked them dB's up so loud, it is over. (Actually, the problem was the hipster drunk fucks that came to this show that were partying in multiple neighbors yards at 2am, who in turned got pissed and called the cops).

On a good note, the show kicked ass, unlike last week which had a bunch of tone deaf fools. Highlight, a group called the Ad Astra Arkestra. My friends that live in the warehouse are in this band, and it is a 7 person group, everyone plays an instrument, and everyone has percussion all around them. It is dancy, not like four on the floor, but like Medeski Martin and Wood dancy, or Futureman dancy. It was dope. Got some pics.
