Doin Soft Time

Well, so last winter, my friend Liz asked me to have a show at Winston Salem's Electric Moustache Gallery. I agreed, made a buncha work over the last two-three months, and now it's all done and in the gallery. This evening, I've been  wading through several days worth of pictures by a few people, trying to intelligibly summarize the exhibit and surrounding events using heinously unwieldy services like Facebook and Flickr.
Here's what I got:

Facebook...

... aaand Flickr.
I'm playing fast and loose with photo credits right now, just to get this done with, but you'll see some by me, my Dad, Liz Simmons, and at least one by Chandra Noyes, of me showing off how my shoes match one of the pieces.
And I can't forget about the invaluable entertainment contributions of DJ 1993-J, who placed his professional reputation on the line during the opening reception to fill my request for Cage's "Agent Orange," and also for sneaking in some tequila.

Web Media Player for BFC site

Alright my brain trust, any recommendations on some music players that you can embedd in HTML for the BFC site? Here is my quick search recommendation:

http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/

if you have other ideas, let me know. I don't need hosting, just the playa playa girl. Ability to change the skin would rock too.

Time to get back in the game.

So after meeting Anthony this weekend (nice to meet you, by the way) and listening to all of your stellar mixes, I've decided to get back into DJing. It's been a long time since I've used my turntables, and I want to use my laptop instead. I wanted to see what you all recommend. I really want to try Ableton or Traktor but I have limited experience with both programs. I basically want to throw in .mp3 files on the fly, but I only know how to do pre-arranged mixes in Ableton. Spontaneity is the key here. Can any of you (Ben? Alex?) help me out with this? Any good online tutorials I should check out? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

russolo intonarumori futurism who gives a damn?

alight music nerds, i've been researching russolo and futurism, specifically the intonarumori, instruments that made "noise" instead of traditional "musical" sounds. aside from the whole neubatuen, srl, grimey industrial trajectory, who are some others that have been influenced by this directly? the development of synthesizers isn't really what i'm thinking about here since the initial goals of synthesis were to create musical sound. Musique concrete i suppose is a good path to follow, using recorded sounds of the city, machinery, modern living. Are there more modern examples anyone can think of?

bwaaaaaah wuh wuh wuh wawawawaaaaaaa

So first let me congratulate Ian on "soft times for hard times", a headbanger of an art show in Winston Salem... I hope he's gonna post some flicks, but if not i can hook it up next time I go the werehouse.

Next.. because of that show and the Jamz/El wedding I was, able to be in a coffee shop with 3 other BFR bloggers at the the same time... sort of a first for me ( since everyone lived in asheville)... so that was exciting. it went down sort of like this.

But getting down to business, I can't seem to shut up about Wobblers. They are those hammerfall dubstep tracks with a whipping lfo tweak the third beat of every measure. I thought i'd post the youtube vids, so, yaaaaaay. They aren't really that much to look at but damn do they wobble.

The latest Petersen post is not to be missed. Dope soundtrack too.

Also, in case any of you somehow missed it (doubtful, judging by the numbers) there is a Facebook page for BFC. I'll continue to hijack Ben's unreleased shit and drop it there (there's a new cut there now).

burial + four tet vinyl only release sold out in a day

this shit sold out after apparently only being up for pre-order today.

oh well, i'll just had to wait until mp3s of it flood the interwebs.

p.s. when is warp going to make a single goddamn decent website?

whole. eeee. shit.

Sorry for the back to backs, but dude. Cops and clowns killing each other? There.

Promotion in traditional media really does work!

See Rick Ross as an example.

FWIW, I listened to the Rick Ross record the day it came out (Tuesday). I wanted sooooo much to like it, but it's just not in the cards for me. Or probably anyone.

A story that reinforces the fact that I should spend as little time as possible in public

I was at Micheal's, the walmart of art supplies, the other day, and unlike everyone else in that store, I was flying a space ship with my head. I was right and in search of something that I could make odd custom packaging for random sqrt CD's. I was on the prowl. The music sucks in those stores anyway, and I left my mp3 player in the car cause I thought I would only be a moment. Then my spaceship's navigation system went down and I got lost, in a store. The music still sucked. An then this came on:

Still not out of place for being in the middle of Kansas in the middle of a suburban strip mall (see Airport Rd in A-town for those of yall been there in the last few years). But then, two isles over, I heard a dude fucking whistling the song, getting into it. Freaked me out, so I made a B-line for the door, and on my way out, I heard another chick fucking singing this song like she was on American Idol. I mean, I thought she was about to cry. Freaked me out.

I wanna write songs with words, so when people hear them, they cry.

apb on some dumbass info

anyone know a good, legit way to rip audio from divx or avi? and for that matter, straight from a dvd? all the googlage on this topic is so diluted by eastern european scam software ads that i can't figure it out.

Where is your god now?

ediT show in Lawrence KS

ediT was raw, no need to beat around the bush. No 5 paragraph bullshit review like the last two, just 5 paragraphs of me cussin. Some observations though,

Fuckin bitches in glow in the dark fake fur mother fucking knee high goddamn boots. Damn. Tiff had a conversation with the girl in the bathroom, said she dropped $500 on them. I can see gray asking himself if they have a Nike Special Order Lebrons with that glow in the dark stitch and some fuckin fur on the swoosh.

Fucking bitches with mother fucking goddamn holla hoops. Fuck. I saw like 6 different broads with them, Yeah, I ain't bullshit. I have seen some dumb ignorant shit at these concerts that have crossover appeal to the hard core E fans, but damn, holla hoops? Fuckin those ribbon shitz they use in the gymnastic olymics would be so much better.

Drank 3 double Jims, realized the world was not near the brink of destruction. Also mention worthy, mohawks, chicks and dudes dressed up to go out to like Homecoming, which is rare in a a town that everyone thinks jogging pants are THE in thing, and one dude with a Dead shirt on. I was ganGstaed up in my fresh pressed BFC T and my Chi-Soxs hat. Mad pimpin until I sweated my ass off (asscap reference for AGL so he didn't think I was hatin) through the hat DANCING MY ASS OFF. Some black girl came up and gave me and Tiff high fives for breaking it down so damn hard. So damn hard.

trust me on this

Feels good.

missed connections

I've been spending a lot of time on craigslist looking for an apartment lately, and I had all but forgotten what a goldmine of hilarity and schadenfreude "missed connections" could be. Here are links to some of my faves from today. I think my favorite is the guy who thinks he can spit game at three college hotties (who I'm sure completely remember him) by talking about computer science. The spot for post with best title is a tie between "i saw you drankinin da pahk" and "your balls were hanging out... 2:00 p.m. today". Also, if anyone knows how you go about renting a dog, please let me know.

Another tough question....

So for this class i have to bring in an example of what i consider "electronic music."
I'm pretty sure i'm taking in Autechre.
I know its impossible to present an idea of electronic music with one song...but if you had to pick just one....what would it be?

summer concert stokedness

in response to brian's concert reviews and the fact that the weather is starting to awesome itself up, here are a few late spring / summer concerts i am stoked about in no particular order:

-leonard cohen (everything i've read and heard about this tour says not to miss it if at all possible)
-moderat (modeselektor + apparat)
-femi kuti

anybody else have good summer shows coming up in their respective areas (post 'em)?

Philip Glass Concert Review

I went to the Philip Glass concert on April 7th at KU’s Lied Center. This was one of the best non autechre/squarepusher shows I have ever seen. The concert consisted of 3 performers, Glass-daddy on piano, Wendy Sutter on cello, and Mick Rossi on percussion. There were a combination of piano solos, cello solos, duets and trios. 90 minutes of greatness, and they played 2 encores. Tha Hotness. I am not going to write a very long review of this like a DJ Spooky, cause I can only use the word “awesome” so many times without sounding like a fry head stoner (peanut gallery, please hold comments back).

The cello player, Wendy Sutter, was sick, mad sick. Her motion on stage while performing was amazing, she was doing some very technically complicated things on a cello. It looked like what Jimi Hendrix was seeing when he looked at himself play with his head band on . . . it was quite trippy and impressive.

The percussionist, Mick Rossi, was pretty sick too. He did a few hand drum things (and played a snare drum using his hands as well). He had a marimba and some other melodic type percussion things too. And a gong. And old boy sat down behind the Grand Piano and broke it down. This is what it sounds like when I’m breakin it down.

Glass-daddy was off the chain. He knows the pieces he writes like the back of his hands. It was completely amazing to see him perform.

I only had two negative comments, first one, during one of the songs, the drummer messed up halfway through and never got back on. The only reasons I noticed it were because of the drummer and Glass looked up, and the drummer ended about a beat and a half off. The other thing was that the old dude behind me must have had a circulation problem in his legs and was tapping his foot the WHOLE show. I gave him the look of death, and he apologized very quickly, and then 10 minutes later, was doing it again. Off meter and everything, drove me nutz. But he was old, so I couldn’t get to mad.

Some links to articles about his performance in Kansas-

Good Friday

So, I am at work on this good friday, and one of the cats I work with just used a phrase that my "grew up in the bible belt" ass never heard before. Dude refered to Jesus as "that Jewish Zombie." My boss lady is Catholic I think, so I am not sure how she handled me busting out laughing so hard I cried at my desk when he said it, but . . . whatever. Then dude said, most things that die and rise from the dead get shot in the head, but The Jewish Zombie gets to rise again and people eat ham.

Pic above is from a google image search for "Jewish Zombie"

keeping eachother up on music

Everytime someone posts a list of albums like this (Ian's last post) I never get around to everything worth listening to. So if any of you guys are on Last.fm, join up here:

http://www.last.fm/group/Broken+Fader+Review

Also, you really should check out Lala to listen to free shit in-full w/o downloading anything. I don't use Last.fm all that much but I started letting it "scrobble" everything again. Anyway, would be interested to see what the group is listening to as a whole.

This is why the internet exists.

I thought I had seen it all, so when the conversation turned to vore, I let out a knowing chuckle as the vore virgins gathered around the screen. But then we traveled to a part of the internet I was heretofore unfamiliar with. Well, I'm glad I've found it, and now must share with you.

And then of course, there's this.

So I'm working on some new stuff-

This guy doesn't have a name, yet, so I'm taking suggestions. I'd prefer one that might suggest a methodology for naming the other twenty-or-so, and the planned at-least-ten-more.
What's going on is that I have a show at Winston Salem's prestigious Electric Moustache gallery opening April 26.
After a couple years making stuffed toys on kind of a work-for-hire basis, I'm striking out on my own, and trying to decide if the things I'm currently working on are even necessarily toys.

WORK PLAYLIST
Sabrepulse- Various. All his stuff is available free, mostly via bittorrent, last I checked. I'd actually pay for it if I found a way. Pleasure-center-raping 8-bit breakcore ("chipbreak"), along with some less successful but nearly as endearing forays into straight D'n'B, dubstep, Ed Banger-style hard house, etc. For the most part, it's like if Bogdan Raczynski were 8-12 years younger.
Dan Deacon-Bromst. Mother of god. OK, just got hold of this. I've seen Dan Deacon perform several times, in Winston Salem and Asheville. Those shows rank among some of my happiest memories, no joke. It's just the most utterly silly, infectious, life-affirming music happening in our lifetimes. Dude belongs on Sesame Street the way motherfucking GROVER does. And this album is what happens when you take that, multiply it by a perilous closeness to one's 30's, and add a full band to the toy keyboards and light-up halloween decorations.
Battles-Mirrored. Slept-on. Whoops. In rating songs for the Warp20 thing, I came across an anonymous summation of my exact feelings about this album, something to the effect that, on first listen, 'holy crap this is the most annoying thing EVER", but every subsequent listen yields some compelling subtlety until you're in love. This was more or less the evolution of my relationship with Confield, and I don't think anybody here would step to Confield
Black Moth Super Rainbow-Dandelion Gum. More slept-on-ness. I had this on my computer for nearly a year before giving it my full attention. If you're not completely engaged, it might seem like a lower-fi retread of the more rhythmic end of the Boards of Canada catalog, but that's barely the half of it. The weaker parts of the album DO come a little too close to directly channeling BoC, but most of it superbly blends pastoral psychedelia and instrumental hip-hop in a way that just makes you want to cram your mouth so full of mushrooms that you can't close it and just hope for the best.

Wow, this is running way long... OK

sounding board

This quarter i'm taking a class called "Literature and History of Electronic Music."
We've only met once so far (meeting again in the morning) and i think this would be a good venue for pouring out and thinking of some of the ideas we're planning on talking about in class.
Last week we listened to a few pieces:
Milton Babbit: Philomel, soprano and four track
Otto Leuning: Low Speed, flute and pre-recorded tape
Grandaddy Stockhausen: Elektronishe Studien
Schaeffer: Etude violet
Edgar Varese: poem electronique

while listening we began to compile a list of characteristics by which to explicate these pieces a little better. You've all mostly some experience thinking about these things and I'm looking for your input. What are some of the characteristics you can think of that begin to build value in a work of electronic music/noise?

Our first assignment was to come up with the most influential new instrument of the 20th century. I feel like the computer is the most obvious, i'm not really sure anything else has had as much impact on music as portable processing power (not only in music but across the board.)
Other nominations? Why?

Discuss.
